Brief History of Khunti Judgeship:
The history of Khunti Judgeship is inseparable from the history of Ranchi Judgeship.
Khunti District came into being as a Sub Division of Ranchi Judgeship on 1st December 1905 and the first Divisional Officer was Arthur Lov Day Inglish who held the power of first class Magistrate and Munsif. He was empowered to decide suit value upto Rs 2000/-. Two Honorary Magistrate of 2nd Class were also there for trying minor cases.
Separation of Judicial and Executive function in Ranchi District was w.e.f 1st July 1964. Hon’ble Patna Highcourt used to provide Additional Court at Khunti as per requirement. Consequently an exclusive court of Munsif was created in the year 1974 and Sri Chakradhar Rai was appointed by the Hon’ble Patna High Court vide Notification dated 13th of March 1974. He tried original suit and also vested with the power of court of small causes. He was given the power for trial of Criminal cases vides notification dated 24-07-1974 and worked as Sub- Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Khunti. A Separate court was established on 25-05-1987 which was presided over by Sri. S.K Prasad Sub- Judge, Khunti. The Sessions Court was established in the year 1993 wherein the First District and Additional Sessions Judge was Smt. Shakuntla Sinha.
The Judgeship was separated from Ranchi Judgeship on 10th of May, 2014, which was Inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Chief Justice of Jharkhand Smt. R. Bhanumathi. It got its first Principal District and Sessions Judge, Khunti as Sri. Sheo Narayan Singh.
Solar enabled Judgeship : It is India’s first ever Solar enabled Judgeship which was inaugurated by Sri. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India on 02 October, 2015. The Solar Power Plant was built by Statcon under the supervision of JREDA, Ranchi, a wing of Energy Department, Govt of India.
Description of the Solar Power Plant :
a. Total 720 solar panels out of which 600 is installed on ground and rest on the roof top of District Court to trap energy from the Sun’s Ray. .
b. Cost of Project Rs. 2, 21, 60000.
c. 180 KWP energy is generated from the Plant which is used by the District Court, Khunti out of which 90 KWP is supplied to Collectorate, Khunti
d. Two solar PCU of 100 KVA each have been installed for conversion of Solar energy into Alternation Current A.C
Total 12 courts in the campus of District Court
The building comprises of 4 Court building comprising of 4 Court and 8 Court Building comprising of 8 Courts in the District Court Complex.
District Legal Services Authority, Khunti is running in the 4 court building.
